Despite having already blown through my entire "travel" budget and then some, with a planned trip to Scotland and/or Wales yet to come in June, I'll dip into the coffers and try and scrounge up a little work to help make up the difference. There are too many things that are important for me to see, and I'm not sure when I'll get a better chance to see some of them.
Along those lines, and trying to squeeze the most out of my time and monetary budget, I decided to move quickly and today booked what will be a short, but emotionally intense trip to Normandy later this month.
Unfortunately, it looks like Paris will wait for another time. Ryan Air's "Paris" flights actually fly into Beauvais, a town about 30 miles northwest of Paris. But as I'm sort of "big-city'd" and "art museum'd" -out right now, and I'm on a time and money budget crunch, that'll work just fine.
I'm renting a car in Beauvais, which is about a 3 hour drive from the heart of Normandy. I'll have about two days to explore the region before heading back to Beauvais. It's not much, but any more than that would probably be emotional overload anyways.
If anyone has any particular suggestions on books or other material I might try and pick up to help enhance my appreciation and respect for what I'll be seeing, please let me know. We happen to have a copy of Band of Brothers on DVD here at the house, so I'll start by rewatching some of that, but anything with a bit more historical detail would be appreciated.
